@prolrage@todon.nl @element@mastodon.matrix.org as a side note, the police, NATO and all these oppressive institutions seem to be turning to privacy friendly, foss projects for communication and at the same time they promote proprietary, attention-stealing, data-collecting, invasive, profit oriented communication platforms for the masses.

So it's quality and private communications for the ruling class and on the other side, exploitative, invasive and trash in general communication for us.

Why are you including Element in this conversation? They are not an ally, they are very much part of the oppressive structure.

Have you looked at their blog posts? They have been regularly boasting about how they work intimately with the NATO military setup, how they have tailored their software for the special needs of that setup, etc.

Element's blog posts mention how the "rules-based world order" is in danger and hint how the use of "element" by NATO and by other arms of the West is a necessity to keep this world order smoothly functioning ("rules-based world order" is a standard euphemism for a system that deems legal the exploitation and loot of the global south by the global north, and deems illegal steps taken by any country to reduce or stop that loot).

Recently, when "Signalgate" happened in the USA, Element promptly wrote a blog post claiming how the security apparatus in the USA should have been using "element" so that no unauthorized person would have gotten advance hint of the plans to relentlessly bomb Yemeni civilians.

So they are not even coy about being a tiny cog in the Western imperial machine.

Yes, people/organizations that pretend to be allies are more dangerous, they can stab you in the back. Matrix/Element belongs to that category.

One may think these are all shenanigans by the company "Element", the Matrix Foundation C.I.C. has nothing to do with it. However, in 2019, the Matrix Foundation C.I.C. passed a resolution basically saying that Hodgson and Le Pape (founders of Matrix/Element and former employees of Israeli-origin company Amdocs) being directors and shareolders of the company Element does not matter, they are authorized to act as decision-makers for the Matrix Foundation C.I.C irrespective of any conflict of interest arising from their positions as the top bosses of Element. For reference, on this filing history page, check out the “View PDF” option for the June 02, 2019 entry titled “Resolution of adoption of Articles of Association”.

So essentially nothing much separates the company Element and the Matrix Foundation Community Interest Company.

And as far back as 2016, before either New Vector Ltd. (later Element) or Matrix Foundation C.I.C. were even established, Matrix founders were enthusiastically talking about Matrix being an "Internet of Things" platform (wearable computing, drone control/telemetry/video, robotics, etc.)

Given that Internet of Things was always meant to turbocharge surveillance (and exploitation) of employees in workspaces and of the general populace everywhere, Matrix's enthusiasm to be a part of this surveillance system did not bode well even then.
